The word millionaire still has magic. Here's what the data actually says — in Canadian dollars, for Canadian families.
| Families worth ≥ $1M CAD | 4,400,000 |
| Families worth ≥ $10M CAD | 108,000 |
| Adults worth ≥ US$1M (different measure) | 2,098,000 |
The first two rows are Canadian-dollar family wealth (PBO, 2023). The UBS figure counts individual adults in US dollars for 2024 — a different yardstick, shown for context.
| Top 20% of families | $1.0M |
| Top 10% | $1.6M |
| Top 5% | $2.4M |
| Top 1% | $6.3M |
| Top 0.1% | $28.8M |
| Top 0.01% | $129.5M |
From the PBO's earlier release (data year 2019). In 2023 dollars the top-1% threshold had risen to $7.4M.
Share of total Canadian family net wealth held by each group.
Survey data alone can't see the very wealthy — the Survey of Financial Security sample is too small at the top. The Parliamentary Budget Officer's High-net-worth Family Database fixes this with Pareto interpolation checked against billionaire lists and the National Balance Sheet Accounts. Figures include the value of the primary home. Units differ by source: PBO counts economic families; UBS counts individual adults in US dollars.
